Why Delhi to Deoghar trip special in Sawan Month?

A  Delhi to Deoghar trip during Sawan (July–August) is special because it centers around the Kanwar Yatra and the Shravani Mela, where millions of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, undertake a sacred pilgrimage

Why the Trip is Special in Sawan

  • The Sacred Jyotirlinga : The journey leads to the  Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar , which is one of the twelve highly revered Jyotirlingas in India.
  • Shiva and Shakti Confluence: It is one of the rare sites where a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha sit side-by-side.
  • Asia's Longest Religious Fair: During Sawan, the city hosts the Shravani Mela. Millions walk 108 km from Sultanganj to Deoghar on foot, carrying holy Gangajal to offer to Lord Shiva.

Practical Details for Your Journey

  • Distance & Travel: The journey covers about 1,200 km by road, or you can opt for a train or flight to nearby hubs (like Patna or Ranchi) to reach Deoghar.
  • Important Note: While the atmosphere is intensely spiritual and vibrant, the Shravani Mela season brings massive crowds and long lines to the temple.

Every Sawan, millions of Kanwariyas pour out of Bihar, Jharkhand, UP and Bengal toward Deoghar -home to Baidyanath Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve most sacred Shiva shrines in India. The ritual: collect holy Ganga water (from Sultanganj on the banks of the Ganga, near Bhagalpur), walk or ride to Deoghar, and offer it to Baba Baidyanath while chanting “Bol Bam!
